John Hooper is eminently qualified to write a book about what makes the Italians Italian: he's currently the Italy correspondent for "The Economist" and "The Guardian", and has lived the the country for many years.

And he has produced a very good book, looking at the social and cultural phenomena that underlie Italy's political and economic /5(). The Italians is similar to that book. He takes a big picture view of the country, examining its history, the system of justice, politics, crime (including the Mafia), religion, and so on.

Obviously, that's a lot to take on, so it's a survey, not a deep down inspection/5. The book is a series of unenlightening essays that basically just say "Yes, Italians are white and they should feel guilty for it".
